A Church of the Brethren was organized by Alexander Mack, a miller, in Schwarzenau, Germany, in 1708. A foremost church was established around United states inside 1723. These churches became unremarkably called German Baptist Brethren. These are the Protestant, Anabaptist Church. A denomination holds a Future Testament when its sole creed. Historically the church has taken a hard stance for non-resistance or pacifism. It experienced 131,200 members inside astir 1100 congregations & fellowships within 2004. There are 6 liberal arts colleges & 1 seminary (Bethany Theological Seminary in Richmond, Indiana) related to the Church of the Brethren. General agents & a Brethren Press are located in Elgin, Illinois. Around 1948 the Church of the Brethren joined the World Council of Churches as the charter member, and was a forming member of the National Council of Churches in 1950.
